What Is A Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels can consist of alpha hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acids and beta hydroxy acids. They are categorized as superficial, medium-depth and deep, depending on how far they penetrate your skin. Superficial peels are the lightest and penetrate the upper layer only of the epidermis. These peels are for those without major sunspots, wrinkles or acne and acne scarring. Medium-depth peels are stronger and are ideal for those who have moderate damage to the skin, like age spots, actinic keratosis and freckles. Deep chemical peels are the most aggressive and penetrate the skin to the reticular layer of your skin’s dermis.

Most patients prefer to have a series of chemical peels in order to achieve their skin goals. However, results can typically be seen after just one chemical peel. Our chemical peels can also be combined with laser resurfacing treatments to maximize results.

What Can I Expect From A Chemical Peel?

In preparation of your peel, you should avoid waxing the face, deep exfoliation or any treatments or products that cause dryness five days prior. During your peel, you will likely feel a tingling sensation until the solution neutralizes. The peel can also cause redness that may last up to five days. Deeper peels may produce swelling and redness, which is normal. As your skin sloughs away, it is important to let it do so naturally, rather than peeling it off yourself.

Following your peel, your skin will be photosensitive. As such, daily sunscreen is a must as your skin recovers. A consultation with our medical aesthetic professionals will determine which peel or skin treatment is right for you. Exact aftercare instructions will also be given to you based on the type of treatment you receive.
