Some patients come to me because they are frustrated with the appearance of their breasts. Not necessarily the size, per se, but the overall shape and volume (or lack thereof). Many of these patients inquire about a breast lift.
But what exactly is a breast lift? Does it require an implant? Read on for answers to some frequently asked questions.
Breast lift 101
As women get older, the breasts can start to sag and experience volume loss, resulting in unflattering breast placement, uneven breasts and a loss of cleavage.
Generally speaking, breast implants are used to give a patient larger breasts. On the other hand, a breast lift is a procedure that improves the appearance of sagging breasts and provides a more ideal nipple placement. Overall, a breast lift offers a more youthful appearance to the breasts.
A breast lift and implants (or breast augmentation) can be done together or they can be individual procedures. A breast lift works to reshape breast tissue and tighten underlying tissue but will not provide you with larger breasts.
Which is right for you?
If your breasts have only mild drooping or if you wish to increase their size, you may opt for an augmentation instead. If your breast sagging is more severe, and if you already have decent sized breasts (a C cup or D cup, for example) and don’t wish to enlarge them, or if your areola is too large or the nipples are pointing downward (and you can’t see any skin below the areola), you may do well with a breast lift alone.
As always, an in-depth consultation is recommended in order to determine the best course of action for any cosmetic procedure.
