A Look at Breast Reduction Surgery

Dr. Andrew Lofman is starting a new series in which he walks us through the entire process of deciding whether plastic surgery is right for you, and what to expect during the following recovery period. The fourth procedure he wanted to focus on was Breast Reduction.

From Dr. Lofman:

This 27 year old female came to office with complaints related to large breasts.  She wore a size G bra and complained of back pain, neck pain, grooves in her shoulders from her bra straps, and rashes along her inframammary folds. This is typical of what most of my patients face when dealing with breast hypertrophy.

We discussed a bilateral breast reduction surgery.

Day 1 of seeing the patient. Breast Reduction Michigan

One week post op after a bilateral breast reduction with a Wise (Anchor) pattern. Her breasts are more symmetric now.  I removed 780 grams from her right side and 740 grams from her left side. She still has some residual swelling, but has good sensation in both nipples which also have a nice healthy color.

At two weeks post op the white stern strips have been removed. Some of the swelling has begun to subside.  She is already feeling the positive benefits of no back pain and neck pain.  Even the grooves in her shoulders are fading away.

At 4 months post op the majority of the swelling has resolved. Everything is feeling back to normal at this point.  The grooves in her shoulders have disappeared.  She looks very natural and is very happy with her new look.

What To Expect During Your Breast Reduction Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Lofman will talk to you about your personal goals. What do you want to achieve with breast reduction? What issues do you face because of your current breast size? Many patients complain of back and neck pain, but some simply want more clothing options. Dr. Lofman will assess these concerns and determine how cosmetic surgery can best work for you.
In addition to discussing your goals, Dr. Lofman will ask about medications you are taking, your family history with breast cancer and other diseases, and the results of mammograms you have had in the past. He will take photos so you can see what your breast reduction looks like before and after. Dr. Lofman will talk to you about the projected course of treatment and explain any risks you may face along the way. In the end, you will be well informed so you can make an educated decision about whether or not this cosmetic surgery is right for you.
