Perhaps you’ve been noticing more and more fine lines on your face. Or maybe you’re concerned about dark spots that the summer sun has caused or even acne and acne scars on your skin. These are common issues for men and women of all ages that can be effectively addressed with a chemical peel treatment.
What exactly is a chemical peel and is this treatment right for you? Read on to learn more.
A chemical peel is a noninvasive skin treatment that addresses a wide variety of skin concerns and can leave you with smoother skin, improved texture and an overall glow. Chemical peels do just what the name suggests — they peel or shed the outer layer of the skin to reveal fresher, healthier skin.
At Dr. Andrew Lofman’s metro Detroit plastic surgery office, we offer several types of chemical peels to suit our patients’ needs.
Most chemical peels are comprised of alpha hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acids and beta hydroxy acids and are labeled as superficial, medium-depth or deep. These labels depend on the depth in which they penetrate the skin.
Patients who don’t have major dark spots or pigmentation issues/acne scars may be satisfied with a superficial peel, which is the lightest. Those with acne or leftover acne scarring, major sunspots or even substantial wrinkles will find that medium and deep peels can address these issues more effectively.
Though results can typically be seen after one chemical peel, a series may be recommended to reach your aesthetic goals. Following your peel, your skin will be photosensitive, so it will be important to stay out of the sun and apply sunscreen daily. Full results of your peel will be seen in about a week, after your skin has sloughed away.
A consultation with our skin specialists will determine the best course of action for your skin.
